In brief

The University of Oxford is set for an innovative electoral process for its chancellor role, drawing an eclectic mix of 38 candidates, ranging from a Zumba teacher to a left-wing activist, as the institution embraces a more modern voting approach.

The search for the next chancellor of the University of Oxford has attracted an unprecedented 38 candidates, showcasing a mix of unique and diverse backgrounds. The chancellorship, a mostly symbolic position at one of the world’s most revered educational institutions, is historically characterized by the elevation of notable public figures. However, this year’s candidates include an Anglican clergyman criticizing "wokeism," a left-wing activist who draws attention to non-involvement in military conflicts, and even a Zumba instructor claiming her fitness expertise would aid in the demands of the role.Chris Patten, who held the chancellorship for over two decades, stepped down in July, paving the way for a competitive selection process. Jonathan Black, a fellow at New College and director of Oxford's career services, remarked on the shift from a privy selection to a more open and transparent process, reflective of contemporary issues facing the university. This year's voting process is notably accessible, featuring online ballots for the first time. Approximately 26,000 alumni have registered, in addition to 5,000 faculty and senior staff, significantly increasing voter participation compared to roughly 8,000 from the previous election in 2003. The initial round will narrow the candidates down to five, with a final decision set for late November. As Oxford enters this new chapter, the eclectic lineup promises to bring invigorating discussions and perspectives to the iconic institution.
