In brief

In a monumental decision for Romania and Bulgaria, EU member states have agreed to allow these nations to join the Schengen travel zone, set to take effect on January 1, 2025. With this development, approximately 25 million residents can now journey across countries like France, Spain, and Norway without the need for a passport. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed it as a "day of joy" for both countries, which had long been striving for this recognition since joining the EU 17 years ago.

While travelers are relieved, challenges for truckers remain as border bureaucracy continues. Although border checks were lifted on flights and sea travel earlier this year, land border inspections persist. Notably, Hungary plans to conduct thorough checks at the Romania-Hungary border for at least another six months. Concurrently, Bulgaria has implemented a new truck park and electronic scanning system charging truckers for border access. For many, the wait at borders can stretch several hours, with significant economic implications. Romanian Road-Haulers’ Association head Radu Dinescu noted losses amounting to €19 billion attributed to delays since 2012, impacting consumer prices. While private travelers will likely experience the most immediate benefits, trucking logistics still face challenges due to inspections conducted at land borders rather than designated motorway areas.Dinescu criticized government inaction regarding border cooperation with neighboring states, citing an unimplemented EU regulation intended to streamline traffic between member countries. As companies weigh investment locations, the inefficiencies at border crossings remain a significant concern. However, optimism prevails, as industry leaders anticipate the eventual easing of border controls, which could bolster competitiveness in the European market in the months to come.
