The Amsterdam police have detained four individuals in connection with antisemitic assaults on Israeli soccer fans that took place during a recent soccer match in the Dutch capital. The incidents transpired over the course of Thursday and Friday, surrounding the game between Dutch team Ajax and Israeli team Maccabi Tel Aviv.Initially, police apprehended 62 individuals amid escalating tensions around the event, which has drawn heightened scrutiny in light of the ongoing war in Gaza. Videos circulated online showing Israeli fans engaging in anti-Arab chants as they approached the match, accompanied by police meant to safeguard them amid a charged atmosphere. One notably provocative chant referenced the situation in Gaza, provoking further unrest. At the stadium, law enforcement was set in full force, with riot police and mounted officers actively separating pro-Palestinian demonstrators from the Israeli supporters. While most of the initially detained individuals were released, four remained in custody, being implicated in public disturbances.Marijke Stor, a police spokeswoman, confirmed that among the detained was a 26-year-old man whose identity was verified through CCTV footage. She reiterated that being released does not exempt an individual from suspicion, indicating the potential for further arrests as the investigation is still in its early stages.Although no formal charges have yet been brought against anyone, prosecutors and police continue to examine the events surrounding the match, suggesting the possibility of more developments as they gather additional evidence.
