In brief
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Roxie, a three-month-old red panda at the Edinburgh Zoo, passed away following a distressing experience during Bonfire Night celebrations. The young panda had recently lost her mother, Ginger, just five days before her own tragic demise. Initially, zookeepers were hopeful for Roxie's recovery when she started eating independently, but this optimism was fleeting.
On November 5th, as the city erupted in fireworks, Roxie became visibly agitated. Ben Supple, the deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, noted that “Roxie was very frightened by the fireworks,” which contributed to her illness. She subsequently choked on her vomit and died. This incident has sparked outrage and sorrow, leading the zoological society to advocate for stricter regulations on fireworks, especially during events like Bonfire Night. A public petition demanding tighter controls has garnered over one million signatures and was recently submitted to the British government. The loss of Roxie is not only a personal tragedy but also a call to action for animal welfare advocates everywhere.
