Multiple drones have been observed over several military bases in Denmark, notably at Karup airbase, the country's largest military facility, prompting fears of a potential hybrid attack. Following a week of similar disruptions that affected airspace at Danish airports, these latest sightings occurred on Thursday evening and are being investigated by police in collaboration with the Danish military.
Authorities indicated that the disturbances were significant enough to briefly shut down the airspace over Karup; however, there were no commercial flights disrupted during that time. Suspicions surrounding these drone activities have led to speculation of foreign involvement, particularly from Russia, although Danish officials have stated they possess no direct evidence linking Moscow to the incidents.
The Danish Defence Ministry acknowledged the drone incursions but provided limited information regarding their origins or intent. With concerns rising over aerial threats, the incidents have led to discussions among NATO members about the implications of such hybrid attacks, blending military and non-military tactics. This increase in drone activity coincides with similar reports from neighboring countries, including sightings over Germany and interruptions at Oslo's airport in Norway.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted that an assessment of foreign involvement remains open, amidst broader apprehensions about possible indirect aggression tactics employed by Russia against nations supporting Ukraine.
