Impacts of the US Government Shutdown on Travel
The ongoing U.S. government shutdown is raising concerns for travelers as it may significantly disrupt travel services. Without an agreement to fund government operations, many critical airport personnel are forced to work without pay, which could lead to longer wait times and flight disruptions.
As stated by Geoff Freeman, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, The longer the shutdown lasts, the more we can expect to see TSA lines stretching longer, increased flight delays, and cancellations. This situation could also mean reduced operational efficiency across national parks and at airports, affecting the overall travel experience.
Current Status of Air Travel
Travelers can still fly during the shutdown, with approximately 13,200 air traffic controllers and over 61,000 TSA employees expected to remain on duty. However, issues similar to the 2018-2019 shutdown could resurface, particularly if the situation continues for an extended period.
Airports and airlines advise travelers to allow extra time for security checks and to stay updated on flight status regularly as they prepare for potential impacts on their travel plans.
International Travel and Border Security
Port operations for international travelers will likely remain unaffected, as the Department of Homeland Security will ensure that about 63,000 Customs and Border Protection agents continue to work. Passport and visa processes are also anticipated to be minimally affected, aside from the temporary closure of the E-Verify program.
Museums and National Parks
Most Smithsonian museums will remain open through early October. The National Park Service has stated that while most parks will stay open, areas lacking public access may be closed if necessary to protect resources during the shutdown.
Travelers are encouraged to check with individual park sites for the latest updates and accessibility options.
