SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The outer bands of Hurricane Humberto lashed Bermuda on Tuesday as it approached the British territory, with Hurricane Imelda closely following.
A hurricane watch was issued for Bermuda, warning of dangerous seas, strong winds, and heavy rains.
Humberto is 275 miles (440 kilometers) west of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. It is projected to pass north and west of Bermuda while Imelda may pass near over Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2 storm, according to forecasts.
Bermuda's national security minister, Michael Weeks, stated, We face a serious week of weather, urging residents to prepare adequately.
Humberto could bring up to 2 inches of rain, while Imelda may deliver up to 4 inches. The severe weather has prompted evacuations in eastern Cuba, where two fatalities have been reported due to Imelda’s preceding effects.
State media in Cuba reported significant impacts, including landslides that cut off 17 communities, affecting thousands of lives. Emergency response measures are being activated to manage the ongoing crisis as both storms pose significant threats.
