Trump Pushes New Peace Initiative Ahead of Talks with Netanyahu

In a pivotal meeting set for Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump aims to advance a new peace plan aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While Trump expresses optimism about the proposal, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu raises concerns about its finalization.

U.S. President Donald Trump plans to discuss a new peace plan with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a bid to end the Israel-Gaza war. The plan, despite receiving tentative praise from Trump, has yet to be finalized according to Netanyahu and Hamas. The proposal aims to address critical issues like hostages, Palestinian governance, and amnesty for Hamas members, but it faces skepticism from hardline Israeli factions.

US President Donald Trump will push a new peace plan to end the Israel-Gaza war during White House talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

Trump has talked up prospects of reaching an agreement, telling journalists on Friday: I think we have a deal.

But Netanyahu said on Sunday it's not been finalised yet, while Hamas said they had not formally been sent the proposal.

According to leaked copies of the plan published by US and Israeli media, it stipulates the release of all hostages within 48 hours of the deal being confirmed. Once they are returned, Israel will free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences.

Hamas members who commit to peace will be offered amnesty and safe passage out of Gaza - and the group will have no future role in the territory. All Hamas military structures will be destroyed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will gradually withdraw from the Strip and Gaza will be governed by an interim transitional government.

The plan appears to constitute a significant shift of position by the Trump administration, which has previously advocated relocating Gaza's entire population of 2.1m and redeveloping Gaza into a US-owned riviera.

The latest proposal encourages Palestinians to remain in Gaza and acknowledges Palestinian aspirations for a future state, including a potential role for the Palestinian Authority (PA) once it undertakes reforms – a significant red line for Netanyahu.

Despite Netanyahu’s previous objections, pressure is mounting on him from the Israeli public and the families of hostages, as Trump’s impatience with Netanyahu grows amid concerns over Israel's military actions and the ongoing war.

During the UN General Assembly last week, Trump met with leaders of Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar, hoping for successful diplomatic efforts in the region.

The Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in extensive casualties, with significant humanitarian crises reported, drawing international criticism and calls for resolution.
