In brief

Amid escalating tensions in the Ukraine conflict, the US Treasury has sanctioned two Chinese firms linked to drone production for Russia. President Zelensky urges for military assistance and stresses the importance of sustained sanctions against Russia while presenting a five-point 'victory plan' to the EU.

In a significant escalation of its efforts to curb foreign support for Russia, the United States has imposed sanctions on two Chinese companies believed to be instrumental in the production of drones used in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The US Treasury announced that it is targeting Xiamen Limbach Aircraft Engine Co, which manufactures engines for long-range drones, and Redlepus Vector Industry Shenzhen Co, involved in the shipment of these aerial vehicles. Alongside these firms, a Russian intermediary and his company were also sanctioned, resulting in the seizure of their US-based assets. The announcement coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's address to the EU Council, where he highlighted intelligence indicating that China is actively assisting Russia, consequently prolonging the war. Zelensky made a compelling case for continuous military pressure on Russia, asserting that Ukraine is poised to maintain its front line while mounting attacks on Russian territory, contingent on receiving the necessary military support from its allies."The time has come for the free world to not only support us militarily but to show Russia that its actions have consequences," Zelensky emphasized, urging Western leaders to refrain from easing sanctions against Moscow. He underscored the devastating impact of drones used in the war, which have led to significant destruction and many casualties.Zelensky's speech outlined a 'victory plan' consisting of five key points aimed at safeguarding Ukrainian sovereignty while creating a framework for future peace negotiations. He suggested enhancing Ukraine's military capabilities and positioning long-range missiles in Ukrainian territory to deter Russian aggressiveness, stating, "Peace through strength is essential to make sure that Putin respects our resolve."Despite his advocacy for an open invitation for Ukraine to join NATO, Zelensky acknowledged that while immediate membership may not be feasible, such a gesture would strengthen Ukraine's bargaining position against Russia. "An invitation would be decisive," he asserted, while calling for robust financial backing from the EU to bolster Ukraine's defense efforts.Following Zelensky's address, EU Council President Charles Michel echoed the urgency for increased military and financial support, emphasizing that the situation necessitated immediate action to aid Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.
