In brief
In northern Nigeria, a devastating fuel tanker explosion has resulted in the deaths of over 90 people, along with at least 50 injuries. This tragedy follows a recurring pattern of similar incidents where overturned fuel tankers ignite deadly infernos after residents attempt to collect spilled gasoline.
A fuel tanker swerved to avoid a collision on an expressway in Jigawa state, overturning and spilling fuel. The residents of nearby Majia rushed to gather the fuel but were caught in the subsequent explosion. Such accidents are common due to Nigeria's poorly maintained roads, aging vehicles, and lack of enforced safety regulations. Last year alone, 5,000 traffic-related fatalities were reported in Nigeria. This week's explosion is yet another tragic example of the ongoing safety issues on the nation's roads and the dire economic circumstances prompting desperate actions.
