SEOUL, South Korea (MetaWorld Media) — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised South Korea's plans to bolster its military spending during a visit on Tuesday. Hegseth emphasized that South Korea will play a larger role in self-defense amidst increasing aggressions from North Korea.

During annual security discussions with South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, Hegseth expressed that he was greatly encouraged by the commitment to enhance defense expenditure, which will strengthen South Korea's conventional capabilities.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has requested lawmakers' support for an 8.2% increase in next year’s defense budget, highlighting the need for modernization of military assets and a reduction of dependence on U.S. support.

Hegseth noted, We face, as we both acknowledge, a dangerous security environment, but our alliance is stronger than ever. He reiterated plans for integrating U.S. military assets with South Korean forces, especially in response to North Korean actions.

Although no joint statement was issued following the discussions, both leaders affirmed the necessity of a unified approach to address potential provocations from North Korea and other regional threats.

This reinforced commitment reflects a strategic shift as both nations look to collaboratively maintain stability in a volatile region.
