US President Donald Trump has announced that America's trade deal with the UK can always be changed. This comes during an interview with Sky News where he expressed concerns about the current state of the special relationship.
Trump stated, We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to, reflecting on the recent tensions between the US and UK, especially regarding the Prime Minister's stance on the ongoing conflict in Iran. Trump's criticism of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has intensified since Starmer declined to support the US-Israel alliance during the war.
Despite these tensions, Trump reassured that the forthcoming state visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla would not be overshadowed by political disagreements. When asked about the nature of the special relationship between the two nations, he questioned its efficacy, saying, It's the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. And they still aren't there.
Trump's critical perspective on Starmer was further elaborated when he labeled the current UK government’s immigration and energy policies as insane. However, he maintained a personal rapport with the monarch, stating, I've known the King for a long time, and he's not involved in that process. He expressed optimism about the royal visit, looking forward to spending time with the king.
The trade agreement between the two countries has already seen some adjustments, including a tariff deal on cars, aluminium, and steel since Trump resumed office. Nevertheless, the underlying relationship dynamic remains fraught, with Trump openly lamenting a lack of partnership from the UK in critical moments.
