Five people have died and tens of thousands have been left without power in Ukraine after intense Russian missile and drone attacks overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. Four members of one family, including a 15-year-old girl, were killed by a strike in the village of Lapaivka as attacks mostly targeted the western region of Lviv. One person also died in Zaporizhzhia. Zelensky stated that Russia fired over 50 missiles and around 500 drones, summing to a staggering count of 549. In response, Russia reported success in conducting a 'massive' strike on Ukrainian military and infrastructure targets.
Emergency measures were taken in response to the strikes; public transport was suspended and electricity was cut off in many areas. Lviv, experiencing extensive destruction, was particularly affected, marking the largest assault since the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022. Regional heads confirmed around 163 drones and missiles were detected. Amidst these attacks, Zelensky reiterated the need for enhanced protection and faster implementation of air defense systems, emphasizing the urgency of maintaining civilian safety as winter looms.
Intensified Russian assaults have also hit critical infrastructure in other regions, amplifying concerns over energy supplies as Ukraine braces for the colder months. Ukrainian armed forces reported downing numerous missiles and drones; however, significant damage has already been inflicted on cities like Zaporizhzhia, where power shortages ensued post-attacks. The ongoing conflict signifies not only the humanitarian toll but also escalating threats to Ukraine's stability as efforts to find lasting peace remain fraught.
