In a somber and heartfelt response, communities and officials in West Virginia are coming together to honor two members of the National Guard who faced a tragic fate in Washington, D.C. this week. U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, just 20 years old, lost her life, while U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, is currently hospitalized in critical condition following the incident that unfolded on Wednesday afternoon.
Governor Patrick Morrisey expressed condolences and requested a statewide moment of silence as a mark of respect for these brave individuals. He has also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in memory of Spc. Beckstrom, reiterating the profound loss felt across the state. These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked, he said. Their courage and commitment to duty reflect the finest qualities of West Virginia.
Residents gathered at a Thanksgiving night vigil in Webster Springs, where a wall honoring veterans sits, to pay tribute to Beckstrom's legacy. The young soldier had graduated with honors from Webster County High School in June 2023, enlisting in the National Guard just weeks after. Known for her leadership and spirit of volunteerism, she participated in Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful to enhance public safety in the capital.
Friends and family fondly recall her dedication to helping others and her surprising transition from the “girly girl” persona to a committed service member donning camouflage. Beckstrom's former boyfriend shared that she had developed a sense of purpose during her deployment, enjoying the chance to engage with the community around her.
Meanwhile, Staff Sgt. Wolfe's family has expressed gratitude for the support they have received as they navigate this challenging time. Wolfe, who was instrumental in efforts to provide high-speed internet to communities as a lineman, remains in the thoughts and prayers of many as he battles through his injuries. The community continues to show solidarity, with planned candlelight vigils and expressions of remembrance for both servicemen.
