High school homecoming celebrations in Mississippi ended in tragedy late Friday night due to gunfire in two separate incidents, resulting in at least six deaths and multiple injuries.
In Leland, four individuals were killed following a high school football game, with approximately 20 others injured in the chaos that ensued as crowds gathered downtown. State Senator Derrick Simmons provided updates, noting that four of the injured were critically hurt and transferred to a medical center in Jackson.
People were just congregating and having a good time in downtown Leland, commented Simmons, who described the aftermath of the shooting as extremely chaotic with emergency services responding from surrounding areas.
In a separate incident in the small town of Heidelberg, two fatalities were reported on the school campus during the community's homecoming festivities. Police Chief Cornell White revealed that an 18-year-old was being sought for questioning in connection to the shootings, though no other details about the victims had been disclosed.
Authorities are calling on individuals with any information regarding the incidents to come forward, as investigations are ongoing.
Simmons expressed dismay over the rising gun violence contributing to such tragic events, highlighting the immediate need for community support in resolving these cases. It’s just senseless gun violence, he said, reflecting the broader concerns regarding gun proliferation in the area.
