In the early hours of 27 June, police in Thailand’s coastal city of Pattaya discovered the body of a 17‑year‑old girl, Tunchanok Donhomla, inside a suitcase near a railway track. The find came moments after the arrest of 45‑year‑old Australian citizen Simon Peter Carman, who police say was attempting to leave the country.
\An autopsy carried out on the girl’s remains concluded that her death was caused by suffocation. The report noted brain injury that was not the cause of death, suggesting it may have occurred after her body was moved into the suitcase.
\DNA evidence recovered from the girl matched that of Carman, indicating a direct link between the suspect and the suitcase. Police have pressed four charges: murder, concealment of a body, kidnapping of a child aged 15-18, and the removal of that child for an indecent act.
\Carman initially admitted to taking the girl out of the apartment but denied all the charges, claiming he acted in self‑defence. In a recorded message while in custody, he expressed remorse to the family and warned other girls to exercise caution.
\Tunchanok had traveled from the province of Kalasin to Pattaya on 16 June with a friend, and her family described her as a fiercely independent teenager who helped her father with daily chores. Her death deeply shocked her parents and stepmother, who expressed a desire for justice against the accused.
\Law enforcement officials stated that all relevant evidence has been gathered and would be submitted to prosecutors by Friday, with an indictment deadline set for 18 September. A convicted murder charge could lead to the death penalty in Thailand.
