Tennessee Prison Chief Resigns After Failed Execution of Death Row Inmate

Tennessee’s head of prisons, Commissioner Frank Strada, has stepped down after the state's failed attempt to execute death row inmate Christa Pike.

Governor Bill Lee announced the resignation on Saturday, citing the need for a comprehensive review of the execution process and the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Pike, who was sentenced to death in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, survived two lethal injection attempts before being taken to a Tennessee hospital where she is now in critical condition. Her lawyers are seeking to commute her sentence.

Commissioner Strada said that stepping down was "in the best interests" of the state and that the investigation into the execution failure was "entirely appropriate and necessary."
