\South Korea’s annual joint military drills with the US have been cut short by six days at Washington’s request.
\The government said that the “period and scale” of the 2026 Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise had been adjusted following a “proposal of the US side.” The drill will now finish on 21 August, rather than the originally planned 27 August.
\The announcement comes after President Donald Trump tweeted that he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year and that South Korea had declined a role in a U.S. operation on Iran.
\South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun told a parliamentary hearing that the decision to scale back the drills was unknown to Seoul and U.S. officials. The combined field‑training component will also see a partial reduction in scale, although the exact details are still under discussion.
\The unprecedented curtailing has shaken Seoul’s confidence in America’s commitment under the defence pact that underpins the two‑nation relationship. It also sends a similar signal to other U.S. allies in the region, such as Japan and Taiwan.
\On Wednesday, Trump said he gets along very well with Kim Jong Un and will meet him later this year. “The fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing. Not a bad thing,” he said, adding that “If we have a dumb president, then he’s probably not going to be so fine.”
\Details of the potential meeting are unclear, but one possibility could be the sidelines of an economic forum in China in November.
\North Korea’s sister Kim Yo‑Jong said the reduction of the drill was “nothing that merits comment,” adding that the US had not shifted its “hostile policy” against North Korea. She noted that the “scale or length is reduced” does not change the “hostile and aggressive essence” of the drill.
\Over the weekend, Trump wrote on Truth Social that the exercises were costly, largely funded by the United States, and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile.” He also noted that South Korea had declined an invitation to join a U.S. operation on Iran.
\The U.S. and South Korean military leaders announced the Ulchi Freedom Shield at a joint press conference last week, stating the event would be similar in scale to previous years, with about 18,000 South Korean soldiers and 28,500 U.S. personnel participating. The conference also addressed North Korea’s deployment of troops to aid Russia’s war against Ukraine and the training’s relevance to that threat.
