Online retail giant Shein announced its decision to ban all sex dolls from its platform globally, following accusations of featuring products with a childlike appearance. The company's move comes after concerns were voiced by the French consumer watchdog regarding the nature of these listings, which raised alarms about potential child exploitation.
The French Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control highlighted the problematic nature of these dolls, prompting Shein to act. On Monday, the company confirmed it had permanently prohibited all seller accounts linked to illegal or non-compliant sex-doll products and has initiated stricter oversight across its global operations.
Shein has also temporarily removed its adult products category as part of this precautionary measure, ensuring that every listing and image pertaining to the controversial sex dolls has been eliminated from its platform.
To enhance compliance, Shein plans to implement a comprehensive review process and will enforce stricter regulations and a keyword blacklist to prevent sellers from circumventing these restrictions. The fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for Shein, stated executive chairman Donald Tang, affirming the company's commitment to safeguarding children.
The pressure on Shein intensified when France's finance minister warned of a potential ban on the company if it persisted in selling such items, just days before the opening of its first permanent outlet in Paris. Public demonstrations against the company also escalated, with protesters gathering outside the upcoming store to voice their concerns.
This incident marks another chapter in Shein's ongoing challenges, as the brand has previously faced scrutiny over its environmental practices and labor conditions in its supply chain.
