Pope Leo Admitted for Lung Surgery
Vatican officials confirmed that Pope Leo IV. is in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for an operation to remove a lung nodule found during routine checks.
The procedure is slated for Tuesday afternoon, after the pontiff announced his condition at a Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square, stressing the growth was contained and found early.
Pope Leo was greeted by a large crowd at the hospital entrance, where his car’s windows were lowered and he waved and smiled at supporters before being escorted by medical staff.
Cardinal Parolin described the news as a “bolt from the blue,” but noted the Pope’s serenity and confidence in a swift recovery. The Vatican will provide updates later Tuesday evening, and the Pope’s schedule will remain cancelled until 20 October to allow for rest.
