In brief

While Gaza's Christian community clings to their faith, the ongoing war threatens their historic presence in the region, leading many to seek refuge elsewhere.

In the shadow of conflicting narratives and ongoing violence, Christmas has taken on a somber tone for believers in Gaza. Ramez Souri, who mourns the loss of his three children to Israeli airstrikes, shared his feelings of despair and loss as he continues to take refuge in St. Porphyrius, an ancient Greek Orthodox church located in Gaza City. “This year, we will conduct our religious rites and that’s it,” said the grieving father, emphasizing the tragedy that has defined his life in recent times. This year marks fourteen months since the war began, with many Palestinian Christians finding shelter in two main churches in Gaza City—St. Porphyrius and the Holy Family Catholic Church. Despite the sanctity of these havens, the community is increasingly feeling the strain of the ongoing conflict. The heavy bombardment of the city has left many living in a state of fear, with the potential destruction of their religious and cultural heritage looming large.Kamel Ayyad, a representative from St. Porphyrius, reflected on the precarious future of Christianity in Gaza, pointing out that the community risks losing its 1,600-year presence in the territory. Ayyad, who recently fled to Egypt due to escalating violence, echoed a sentiment shared by many locals: “I love my homeland — we all do — but I won’t return immediately before assessing the political and economic situation.” This perspective illustrates the broader feelings of uncertainty and apprehension amongst those who have managed to escape the turmoil. As churches attempt to maintain a semblance of Christmas spirit, the haunting reality of loss and the promise of an uncertain future cast a pall over the celebrations. For many, the hope for peace remains a distant dream, entwined with prayers for safety and the possibility of return.
