Shipwreck found on Nantucket beach amid nor'easter
A recent nor'easter storm washed up debris on a Nantucket beach that historians believe is the remains of the 1884 schooner “Warren Sawyer.” The 19th‑century vessel ran aground off the island in 1884, and fragments were first recovered in 2022 and again in 2023. This latest find — a granite of wooden injury and brass fittings — could cement the wreck’s identity and offer new insights into maritime trade routes of the era.
While the wreck’s discovery has excited archaeologists, the storm’s broader impact was severe. Heavy rainfall and coastal flooding left the northeast in turmoil, leaving over 160 000 households without power and underscoring the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather.
Local authorities and the Nantucket Historical Society now plan a careful survey of the site, hoping to document the schooner’s final journey and integrate the new evidence into a growing catalogue of historic wreckage in Massachusetts waters.
