SpaceX debris crushes Moon surface; KASA releases images

South Korea’s Korean Aerospace Administration (KASA) posted images showing the lunar surface after the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket struck the Moon on 6 August 2026.

The orbiter Danubri, which collects high‑resolution spacecraft imagery, captured ground‑truth photos of the impact area and uploaded them to the agency’s social media. The footage includes a brief flash of the collision and a comparison to pre‑impact lunar photos.

The debris segment hit the Moon at around 05:35 UTC, traveling at roughly 5,400 miles per hour. SpaceX confirmed the crash was accidental and that the impact posed no danger to Earth.

The second image shows the specific location on the Moon where the fragment crashed, displayed on a detailed lunar map that includes the Apollo 11 landing site and Einstein Crater. The impact zone is marked by a small crater formed by the collision.

The Falcon 9 upper stage involved in the impact was launched by Firefly Aerospace in January 2025 and spent 18 months orbiting Earth before gradually accelerating toward the Moon under gravitational pulls from Earth, Moon, and Sun. Its predicted speed of 5,400 mph underscores the power of space debris to alter lunar geology.

The short flash produced by the collision would have been too faint for amateur astronomers, but larger observatories—including the Seoul-based KASA—have analyzed the event. Space scientist Matt Bothwell of the University of Cambridge warned that the growing amount of debris could eventually make it hard to navigate in Earth’s orbit.

While the incident did not threaten Earth, it revealed the need for better tracking of spent rocket stages and underscored the importance of responsible space operations as humanity expands its activities on the Moon.
