BALTIMORE (AP) — Kilmar Abrego Garcia was set to check in with immigration authorities on Friday, approximately 14 hours after his release from detention following a judge’s ruling.
He became a focal point in the immigration debate during the Trump administration when he was mistakenly deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador. Abrego Garcia had been taken into custody in August during a similar immigration check.
His upcoming appointment at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Baltimore comes after a federal judge determined that there was no legal basis for his detention following his return to the U.S.
Mistakenly Deported
Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national with an American wife and child, has lived in Maryland for years, having arrived in the U.S. illegally as a teenager to join his brother. Despite being granted protection from deportation due to threats from gangs in his home country, he was mistakenly deported earlier this year and endured imprisonment in a dangerous facility in El Salvador.
The Trump administration had brought him back to the U.S. only after facing public pressure and a court order, simultaneously issuing an arrest warrant for human smuggling in Tennessee. He maintains his innocence in response to these charges.
Legal Battles
Currently under a lawsuit challenge against his potential removal, Abrego Garcia is fighting against an administration he claims is retaliating against him for the embarrassment caused by his wrongful deportation. A federal judge has criticized the government for misleading the court during the proceedings.
After being released from Moshannon Valley Processing Center and returning home, Abrego Garcia is still in a precarious position, faced with the ongoing threat of deportation as he prepares for his immigration check-in.
