ICE Agent Fires into Bronx Vehicle With Child Inside
On Thursday night, an ICE officer in the Bronx opened fire on a vehicle that was carrying a 28‑year‑old man and a five‑year‑old child.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the officer fired multiple rounds as he attempted to arrest a “criminal illegal alien.” The victim, Oscar Belgal of the Dominican Republic, was taken to a local hospital and survived. According to DHS, Belgal has a record that includes grand larceny and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting an “unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” stating that no child should be exposed to such violence. Governor Kathy Hochul has informed President Donald Trump that she is “outraged” on behalf of New Yorkers and has requested that body‑camera footage be released to the public so the facts can be examined.
The incident follows a spate of controversial ICE shootings this year, including the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis. The ICE official involved is alleged to have been associated with the transnational criminal group Trinitarios.
Community protests erupted at the scene, with demonstrators chanting “We want justice” and “ICE off our streets.” New York City, not a federal jurisdiction for immigration enforcement, has banned its police from assisting ICE operations.
