Heat‑wave season the United Kingdom and Europe has already delivered a stark preview of a new climate. June’s summer broke multiple temperature records and the scorching trends are expected to persist as the global atmosphere continues to warm.



Across the UK 170 weather stations recorded the hottest June on record. The most dramatic shift occurred at Lingwood in Norfolk where a 37.7 °C maximum – a 6 °C jump from the 1957 record – proved the magnitude of a warming world. The heat was accompanied by high humidity, leaving night‑time temperatures above 20 °C across much of England and Wales and making it hard for bodies to cool down.



Other European countries joined the record‑breaking spree. Countries such as Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark each set new all‑time June highs, while several set the highest temperature for any month of the year. The faster warming of Europe’s seas, the blanket‑like heat from the North Sea and the surrounding continental and Mediterranean waters amplified the intensity of the continent‑wide heat dome.



Scientists say that “human‑induced climate change” is what makes such extreme heat events more likely and striking. Chief Met Office scientist Prof Stephen Belcher notes the essential role of the long‑term trend: sometimes, as the climate warms, the same high‑pressure system leads to far hotter peaks than in the past.



The data suggest future summers will not necessarily be hotter day‑to‑day than last, but they will tend on average to rise as emissions slide the planet’s baseline to higher temperatures. Researchers predict that heatwaves will keep on heating until the world stabilises carbon emissions.
