Drones Spot Over German Patriot Base After Leipzig Bomb Incident
Two drones were observed hovering above the Mechernich military installation, which stores components for the U.S.-made Patriot air‑defence system, on Thursday evening.
Germany’s armed forces confirmed the sighting and deployed military police to the site before handing the matter over to local authorities. The incident comes just days after an explosive‑laden device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle airport, a key hub for NATO, the German military and Ukrainian Antonov Airlines.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned that the country faces “daily target of hybrid warfare,” noting that attacks on German infrastructure have escalated since the war in Ukraine began. The Bundeswehr is investigating how a drone packed with explosives reached the runway at Leipzig/Halle.
The situation adds to a series of drone sightings across European airspace, prompting speculation that Russia may be involved in a broader pattern of incursions. Moscow has repeatedly denied any role in such operations.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested additional interceptor missiles, citing a shortage that could cost lives. The Patriot batteries at Mechernich play a crucial role in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles, and their security is therefore of strategic importance to both Germany and its allies.
