An unsettling incident has unfolded in the Russian‑occupied Crimean peninsula. A soldier in the region opened fire on his fellow troops, killing one and wounding another, before targeting civilians in the village of Khmelnytske. Three older residents—a 71‑year‑old man, a 59‑year‑old man and a 64‑year‑old woman—were slain, bringing the death toll to four, with several others injured.
Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow‑installed governor, confirmed the attack and said the assailant has been detained. The motive behind the shooting is under investigation, and authorities have not yet disclosed the gunman’s specific branch of service or personal identity.
Officials cautioned the public against circulating unverified rumours about the attack’s motives, urging reliance on official statements while medical teams work to treat the injured.
Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014, remains a point of contention. The international community largely views the peninsula as an occupied Ukrainian territory, and Russia maintains a significant military footprint there, making it a frequent target of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes.
