Christa Pike, a 50‑year‑old inmate on death row in the United States, remains conscious and speaking after a failed execution attempt, her lawyers reported on Tuesday.

The 1995 murder conviction that earned Pike the death penalty saw her survive two lethal injections, and she was subsequently moved to a Nashville hospital for treatment.

Attorneys noted that Pike had been unconscious during the initial medical clearance of the pentobarbitol that was injected during the execution attempt, but her current state indicates she has survived.

Lawyers and officials are continuing to assess Pike’s medical condition while evaluating the next steps in her legal case.
