In brief

The recent American Crossword Puzzle Tournament highlighted the strong bonds formed around shared interests, illustrating how communities can foster connections and intimacy among enthusiasts.

Last Friday, the lobby of a Marriott in downtown Stamford, Conn., buzzed with excitement as crossword enthusiasts gathered for the 47th American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Hosted by Will Shortz, the puzzle editor for The Times, this annual event transformed into a vibrant hub of camaraderie among both seasoned veterans and hopeful first-timers. Amidst a throng of friendly greetings, nervous yet eager faces scanned name tags, yearning for a chance to connect with their favorite constructors or fellow puzzlers. “Electric!” I jotted in my notebook as I absorbed the infectious energy of the scene.Having considered myself a crossword aficionado, I arrived with aspirations of participating in the event, having admired the crossword world since the 2006 documentary "Wordplay." However, the tournament quickly revealed the community’s true dedication and skill level, with some competitors completing challenging puzzles in mere minutes. Attendees displayed their passion, including one vibrant participant dressed like a ‘cruciverbalist’ Phantom of the Opera, complete with a grid-themed cape.As the weekend unfolded, I joined fellow competitors for six timed puzzles, managing to finish all but one within the allotted time. While my performance was commendable, success at this tournament wasn’t solely measured by speed. Instead, it was about celebrating a shared love of puzzles and forming connections. In the elevator after my first session, I found myself engaged in animated conversations with strangers over tricky clues, a stark contrast to the typical elevator etiquette of avoiding eye contact and retreating into our devices. This kind of immediate intimacy is a rarity in everyday life. We often shy away from budding connections with strangers, preferring to keep interactions brief. However, surrounded by fellow crossword enthusiasts, every participant was eager to share their experiences and passions. This community atmosphere fostered openness, making it easy to strike up conversations based on a mutual interest. After the tournament, I visited an old friend from college. Their familiarity provided comfort after the exhilarating experience with how swiftly connections had formed among newcomers. Although I cherished our bond, I found myself longing for that unique excitement I had just experienced. The ideal pairing would involve my friend sharing my crossword passion – a wish unlikely to be fulfilled as he had shown little interest. As I reflected on the tournament experience, it became clear how vital shared passions and communities are in a world where genuine connections often feel elusive. Engaging deeply with a niche interest transforms the mundane into something profound, reminding us that connection can flourish when we come together in celebration of what we love.
