Canada has imposed up to 50% tariffs on nearly C$28 bn of US imports, citing retaliation to President Trump’s levies.
In a swift response to new US tariffs on Canadian goods, Ottawa announced counter‑tariffs that could reach 50% on a wide range of products, including steel, furniture, fresh tuna and cotton apparel. The Canadian levy list, covering around 900 items, will hit the U.S. trade basket of almost C$28 bn, taking effect on 8 September. Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne described the measures as "proportionate" and "strategic," while the government pledged C$7.5 bn in support for affected businesses. The escalation threatens to deepen strain on North American supply chains and could test the resilience of the USMCA framework.
