California Shooting Claims Life of New York Times Executive

On a quiet Saturday afternoon, Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the New York Times’ director of engineering for games player experience, was found dead after multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot outside the Dublin Sports Grounds, 35 miles east of San Francisco.

Police say the attacker was the 77‑year‑old couple, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, the victim’s wife’s parents. They have been arrested and face first‑degree murder as well as conspiracy and other charges.

Witnesses heard a series of gunshots before seeing McKinsey collapse. One, Assad Razawi, described a scene with blood on the ground. Another observer noted that the couple were seen walking away after the shooting and were apprehended by a passing officer.

McKinsey’s death was confirmed by the New York Times newsroom. He was pronounced dead at the parking lot at 3:00 p.m. local time.

The investigation is ongoing; police have not yet released a motive for the killing. The defendants are being held at Santa Rita Jail, awaiting a hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
