A mudslide buried a girls’ school in Cox’s Bazar’s largest Rohingya refugee camp on Wednesday afternoon, killing eight people, including seven children and a teacher.
Rescue teams pulled 13 people out of the mud, but eight did not survive. The teacher and seven students were trapped under the rubble, while five other children survived and were taken to hospital for treatment.
The landslide occurred as intense monsoon rains intensified on the coast, with earlier storms already causing fatal collapses in the region. Authorities warn that further heavy rain is expected, putting additional risk to the camp’s fragile infrastructure.
Cox’s Bazar hosts more than 1 million Rohingya refugees who fled a 2017 military crackdown in Myanmar. The camps are built on steep hillsides with makeshift tarpaulin and bamboo shelters, leaving residents especially vulnerable to floods and landslides caused by seasonal rains.
