Anuv Jain: Riding Indian Indie Pop Without Bollywood’s Spotlight

Anuv Jain, the acoustic‑indie pop singer‑songwriter from Ludhiana, Punjab, tells BBC Newsbeat that recognition can come from authenticity and persistence alone, even in a market that has long been dominated by film music. With a taste for tender lyrics that explore love and heartbreak, his songs have racked up hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and garnered an audience of over 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Unlike many of his peers, Jain has never relied on a Bollywood contract to boost visibility. Instead, he releases music on his own terms, only putting out one track a year until recently. “I’ll finish a project before I share it,” he said backstage before a sold‑out show at London’s Roundhouse, “because I want each piece to feel fully realised.”

The artist’s soft vocals, coupled with relatable storytelling, have helped him create a personal connection with fans—many of whom describe his songs as the soundtrack to their lives, whether they’re driving, running, or simply alone at night. Jain himself frames his creative process by imagining how a listener in a moving car or a quiet space would experience a small lyric or a melody: “I try to write what I would listen to myself or my family would enjoy.”

Jain’s success has earned him an album of his own, a string of collaborations, and a hit titled “Afsos” with Punjabi rapper AP Dhillon, which together topped the Asian Music Charts. He calls this achievement, however, “no recipe” and cites completeness over volume as the main driver behind his growing influence.

Looking ahead, Jain has indicated a willingness to collaborate with bigger names but firmly wishes to preserve his artistic identity. He said, “The storytelling cannot get diluted just because there’s a bigger name attached.” While he has not yet had a project with a mainstream Western star, he made a passing remark that a partnership with former One Direction singer Zayn Malik “would work very well with the kind of music I produce.”

With an expanding fan base and a career built on authenticity rather than industry muscle, Anuv Jain offers a compelling case study for musicians looking to launch successful brands outside the conventional Bollywood framework.
