The university’s alert system notified the community of the incident, which took place near the Barus & Holley building, a major facility containing the School of Engineering and Physics Department.

Initially, officials indicated that a suspect was in custody; however, this information was later corrected, confirming that law enforcement was actively searching for one or more suspects involved in the incident.

Kristy DosReis, chief public information officer for the city, stated that authorities were still in the process of gathering details from the ongoing scene. The Barus & Holley building is significant for its substantial infrastructure, comprising 117 laboratories, 150 offices, and multiple classrooms.

The situation developed during an important time for students, as Saturday marked the second day of final exams for the fall semester. Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League institution, serves approximately 7,300 undergraduate and over 3,000 graduate students.
