In brief
The landmark agreement includes factory construction, missile development, and enhanced surveillance, reinforcing ties post-Brexit.
The UK and Germany have officially signed what the UK government hails as a “historic defence agreement,” signaling a substantial enhancement in security collaboration, economic investment, and job creation between the two nations. The agreement will see the German defence giant, Rheinmetall, establish a new production facility in the UK dedicated to manufacturing artillery gun barrels, which will create approximately 400 jobs.In addition to the factory, both countries are set to collaborate on the development of an advanced long-range missile and drones. German maritime surveillance aircraft will also contribute to patrolling the North Atlantic from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, enhancing regional security. This agreement follows commitments made by the Labour Party during their time in opposition to strengthen military ties with Germany, aligning with the current government's broader strategy to realign relations with key European partners in the wake of Brexit. The union with Germany marks a significant step, as it is the first formal defence treaty between the UK and Germany, complementing the existing defence pact with France, known as the Lancaster House Treaty, established in 2010.Both countries are the largest military spenders within Europe and major contributors to Ukraine’s defence efforts. UK Defence Secretary John Healey characterized the signing of this agreement as a "milestone moment," indicating a closer integration of military capabilities and industry between the two allies. Notably, both nations already collaborate under NATO and are currently involved in joint ventures to produce new tanks and armoured vehicles, including the Boxer armoured fighting vehicle and the Challenger 3 tank through RBSL, formed by Rheinmetall and UK’s BAE Systems.Under the newly established Trinity House Agreement, Rheinmetall will lead the construction of a factory in the UK to recommence the production of artillery barrels, which has not occurred for over ten years. While the site remains undisclosed, the factory will utilize British-made steel from Sheffield Forgemasters, recently acquired by the UK Government. The factory is anticipated to commence operations by 2027.The agreement includes plans for a novel long-range missile program that promises improved precision and range beyond current systems such as the UK's Storm Shadow and Germany's Taurus missiles. While the UK is actively supporting Ukraine, Germany has withheld the supply of the Taurus missile. Furthermore, the UK and Germany are set to expand drone development partnerships, particularly for compatibility with Typhoon jets already operated by both nations. The agreement also outlines the introduction of German P8 maritime surveillance planes to carry out periodic operations from RAF Lossiemouth, contributing to North Atlantic security, following the initiatives taken by other NATO allies. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering NATO's eastern defense capabilities, with troops already deployed to Baltic states as part of enhanced NATO defense responses post-Russia's invasion of Ukraine. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that the agreement strengthens the collective security of Europe and NATO, stressing the importance of vigilance regarding European security.
