WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House has announced that a potential deal involving TikTok aims to give control of its algorithm to U.S. companies amidst ongoing concerns about its Chinese ownership. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that American investors will oversee the app's operations following negotiations with Chinese officials.
Leavitt indicated that tech giant Oracle will manage TikTok's data and security, allowing Americans to hold six of the seven seats on the new governance board. She stated, We are 100% confident that a deal is done, now that deal just needs to be signed. This follows a discussion between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping about finalizing the deal.
Despite legislative efforts in Congress to impose a TikTok ban by January, the Trump administration has postponed action until a sale agreement is reached. The core question remains whether the algorithm for TikTok will remain under Chinese control if the ownership of parent company ByteDance changes.
It’s all being worked out, Trump commented, expressing optimism about retaining control over the platform's operations as negotiations progress.
Leavitt asserted that finalization of the deal is expected soon, with official signing anticipated in the coming days.
