George Wendt, Iconic Cheers Star, Passes Away at 76

George Wendt, the cherished actor best known for his role as Norm Peterson on the ever-popular sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. According to his family, Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at his residence early Tuesday morning. "George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever," a family representative stated.

Wendt was a constant presence throughout all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993, earning him six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. His character, Norm, became a fan favorite, often greeted by exuberant patrons with shouts of his name upon entering the bar, showcasing his unique relationship with the show's audience.

In a poignant reunion, Wendt joined his former cast members at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, sharing warm moments with Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger. Beyond his success in television, Wendt's film credits included roles in films like Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. He also portrayed the father in Michael Jackson's iconic music video for Black or White, which featured young star Macaulay Culkin in 1991.

A dedicated family man, Wendt was married to fellow actress Bernadette Birkett since 1978, and together they raised three children. He will also be remembered as the uncle of actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis, known for his role in the hit series Ted Lasso.
