Santorini Closes Schools Amid Rising Seismic Activity

Following a series of tremors, authorities in Santorini announce school closures to ensure safety.

The Greek island of Santorini will close schools on Monday due to increased seismic activity, with authorities urging caution around gatherings and advising against visiting certain ports.

Santorini, the picturesque Greek island famed for its whitewashed architecture and breathtaking views, has announced the closure of schools as a precautionary measure in light of increased seismic activity. Authorities stated that educational institutions will remain closed on Monday after tremors measuring up to 4.6 in magnitude were recorded over the weekend, with notable quakes of 4.3 and 3.9 occurring nearby on Sunday morning.

While the tremors have garnered attention, Greek geologists have assessed these seismic events as minor or light. They have further assured the public that the recent seismic movements are not indicative of imminent volcanic activity, and recent tremors appear to be subsiding. However, local authorities are promoting preventive measures, which include avoiding large gatherings in enclosed spaces and recommending against visits to certain tourist spots, particularly the ports of Ammoudi and Fira, frequently visited by cruise ship passengers.

Santorini is part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, a region historically known for its volcanic eruptions, the most significant of which occurred around 1600 BC, shaping the island into what it is today. Despite the closures and advisories, officials are working to monitor the situation closely and keep locals and tourists informed of developments as they arise.
