At least three fatalities have been reported after a bus accident in Norway's Hadsel region, prompting emergency responses.
A devastating bus crash in Norway has resulted in at least three fatalities, as confirmed by local police. The incident occurred around 13:30 local time in the Hadsel district, located on the north-western coast of the country. The bus, which was reportedly transporting 58 passengers—many of whom were foreign nationals—lost control and ended up partially submerged in Åsvatnet lake.
Authorities have indicated that in addition to the confirmed deaths, four other individuals sustained serious injuries. Critical care is ongoing, with three of the injured being airlifted to Stokmarknes Hospital. Meanwhile, additional passengers were safely evacuated and taken to a nearby school to ensure their safety.
The Norwegian Red Cross has mobilized teams to the site to assist in the wake of what they described as a "serious bus accident" on the E10 road. Emergency services including fire and ambulance units have been actively engaged in rescue operations, although attempts have been hampered by significant snowdrifts and strong winds in the area.
According to public broadcaster NRK, the bus was en route from Narvik to the scenic Lofoten archipelago when the accident occurred. In the aftermath, Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, the mayor of the nearby Vågan district, announced the establishment of a crisis team and designated local accommodations to support affected families.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre addressed the tragedy, calling it "a very serious situation," expressing his condolences to those impacted by the unfortunate event. Rescue and recovery efforts continue as the community bands together in this challenging time.
