Surfers Converge for the Iconic Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational

Tens of thousands gather at Waimea Bay for this rare surfing spectacle.

The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, held in Oahu, Hawaii, draws global surfers and devoted fans for its infrequent yet exhilarating competition that showcases the ultimate challenge in big-wave surfing.

As the sun rises over Waimea Bay in Oahu, anticipation fills the air as surfers and spectators flock to witness the legendary Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. Known simply as "The Eddie," this prestigious event is held only under specific weather conditions, making it a highly sought-after occasion for surfing enthusiasts worldwide.

Barry Sweet, who runs a food truck at Pupukea Grill, noted the event resembles a pilgrimage as spectators build excitement from the morning hours until the contest begins. He, along with his family, takes in the scene from their vantage point along Kamehameha Highway—a key route for accessing Waimea Bay.

When the competition is announced—just 48 hours in advance—45 invited surfers and 25 alternates scramble to arrange their travels to the event. Ranging from Australia to Tahiti, these athletes prepare to ride the massive waves viewed by tens of thousands of fans who gather on the beach and cliffs lining the bay.

The Eddie has a unique format, with a holding period that stretches from mid-December to mid-March, allowing the contest to commence whenever the surf conditions align just right. Famous for seldom occurring, the event has earned its tagline: “the bay calls the day,” embodying its elusive nature that keeps fans and surfers on high alert for the rare opportunity to compete and witness the thrill of big-wave surf culture.
