New Orleans Attack Investigation: The Role of Meta Smart Glasses Uncovered
New insights reveal how the New Year's Day assailant utilized Meta smart glasses during a tragic attack in New Orleans.
The FBI is unraveling details surrounding the New Year’s Day tragedy in New Orleans, where Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the alleged assailant, utilized Meta smart glasses not only while the attack unfolded but also while casing the area beforehand. Multiple reports indicate Jabbar had been to Louisiana several times leading up to the attack, including visits in the fall of 2023. He also traveled to Egypt and Canada that same year, although investigators are still trying to ascertain if these trips had a direct connection to his assault.
The deadly incident occurred at approximately 03:15 local time when Jabbar drove a pick-up truck into revelers on Bourbon Street, a hotspot for New Year’s celebrations. Dressed in tactical gear, Jabbar exited the vehicle and began shooting at responding officers, injuring two before he was killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The FBI disclosed that Jabbar had placed improvised explosive devices inside coolers on Bourbon Street hours prior to his attack. Although a bomb detonator was found in his vehicle, the devices failed to detonate, reportedly due to Jabbar's lack of access to a detonator. Investigators discovered additional bomb-making materials at an Airbnb Jabbar had rented and at his home in Texas, as well as evidence of a botched attempt to start a fire at the Airbnb.
FBI officials revealed that Jabbar visited Cairo, Egypt, in the summer of 2023, shortly before a trip to Ontario, Canada. Special Agent Lyonel Myrthil stated that investigators are piecing together his travels during this critical period, noting that Jabbar was recorded on CCTV while riding his bike through the French Quarter wearing the advanced glasses which are capable of video recording or live streaming.
Born in Texas, the 42-year-old Jabbar had served in the U.S. Army and had faced personal struggles, including financial difficulties and a history of marital issues. His recent return to Islam raised questions regarding his motives; in online videos, he expressed allegiance to the Islamic State and detailed intentions of violence against "disbelievers."
Law enforcement has confirmed that Jabbar acted alone, although efforts to assess his connections in and outside the U.S. continue. In the aftermath of the attack, security measures in the nightlife district of New Orleans have been heightened. The city has utilized vehicles and barricades to safeguard pedestrians, especially with festivities leading up to Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl approaching.
President Joe Biden is set to visit New Orleans to offer condolences to victims’ families, as the community seeks answers and healing after the devastating event.
