Diver Reveals Harrowing Rescue Efforts After Red Sea Boat Tragedy

An Egyptian diver details the challenging rescue operation following the capsizing of the Sea Story in the Red Sea, where several passengers remain unaccounted for.

An Egyptian diver, Khattab al-Faramawy, shared insights into the challenging rescue effort that unfolded after the tourist boat Sea Story sank in the Red Sea. The incident claimed four lives, with several others still missing, prompting urgent search and recovery operations off the coast of Marsa Alam. Divers deployed torches to navigate dark cabin spaces in a bid to locate survivors trapped inside.

On Tuesday, rescuers successfully located five survivors amongst the submerged wreckage, which had reportedly gone down after being struck by a large wave while carrying a total of 44 passengers and crew members. Among the rescued was al-Faramawy's nephew, Youssef, who is a diving instructor and was initially believed to be missing. Youssef's father, Hussam al-Faramawy, recounted the emotional moment he learned of his son's survival, expressing deep relief amidst the tragedy.

The search operation remains ongoing, with authorities revealing that the Sea Story capsized rapidly, potentially within a mere five to seven minutes after the waves struck. Eyewitness accounts detailed the boat became largely submerged, leaving only part of its structure visible above the water. Meanwhile, rescue efforts have been complicated by the vessel’s precarious position underwater and the perilous conditions in the region.

The Egyptian navy is leading the efforts, and while the identity of victims has not been fully disclosed, preliminary reports indicate the presence of two British nationals among the missing. Other tourists internationally sourced from various countries have also been affected. With the tourism sector being vital to Egypt's economy, particularly diving and marine excursions in the region, this incident raises important questions about maritime safety protocols, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the boat’s sinking. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had previously issued warnings regarding high waves, yet the Sea Story reportedly maintained a valid safety certificate.
