The Israeli military targeted the Ahli Arab Hospital in northern Gaza early Sunday morning, leading to significant damage, although no casualties were reported directly from the strike itself. Shortly before the attack, military officials instructed the hospital's patients and staff to evacuate the premises, warning of imminent danger. Tragically, during this chaotic evacuation, a child being treated for a head injury lost their life, as noted by the Anglican Church in Jerusalem, which oversees the hospital.

The strike added to the already dire situation in Gaza, where the health system is in shambles due to ongoing conflict. Since the war ignited following the Hamas-led assault on Israel in October 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that 33 of Gaza's 36 hospitals sustained damage, rendering only 21 partially operational. Additionally, the blockade imposed by Israel has prevented necessary medical supplies from reaching these facilities, raising alarms about an impending shortage.

The Ahli Arab Hospital had been one of the last operational healthcare centers in the area. Only weeks after the onset of conflict, it had already sustained damage from a missile strike blamed initially on Israel, later determined to be the result of errant fire from groups allied with Hamas.

In the recent military action, the Israeli military confirmed responsibility for the attack but claimed, without presenting evidence, that Hamas operatives used the hospital as a command center. Following the evacuation order, neither the hospital management nor Hamas addressed inquiries regarding the alleged military use of the facility.

The incident further complicates the humanitarian crisis developing in Gaza as both medical infrastructure and civilian safety remain at jeopardy amidst an unrelenting military campaign.
