Prime Minister Múte Egede emphasizes collaboration with the U.S., but affirms Greenland is not for sale.
Greenland has expressed a willingness to enhance cooperation with the United States, particularly concerning defense and natural resource management. In a news conference held in Nuuk, the prime minister responded to President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about purchasing Greenlands, reiterating that the territory, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, is not for sale.
"We have to be very smart on how we act,” stated Prime Minister Múte Egede, highlighting the rising tension among global superpowers. He emphasized that while Greenlanders have no desire to become American citizens, the island remains committed to fostering collaboration with the U.S. “The reality is we are going to work with the U.S. — yesterday, today and tomorrow,” Egede added.
The prime minister also revealed that Greenlanders were taken aback by Trump’s remarks, which coincided with a somewhat enigmatic visit from Donald Trump Jr. This incident has further fueled the dialogue around Africa's strategic importance in global politics.
As candid discussions unfold, Greenland's leaders assert their dedication to preserving their sovereignty while looking for mutually beneficial partnerships in defense and resource exploration.
