Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Ascends as the New Aga Khan

Shia Ismaili Muslim community welcomes its 50th Imam following the passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan.

Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini has ascended to the esteemed title of Aga Khan, becoming the spiritual guide for millions of Shia Ismaili Muslims globally. He inherits this role after the recent passing of his father, Prince Karim Aga Khan, who died on Tuesday at the age of 88. The announcement was confirmed by the Aga Khan Development Network following the unsealing of Prince Karim's will.

As Aga Khan V, Prince Rahim will serve as the 50th hereditary Imam of a community that traces its lineage back to the Prophet Muhammad. The Ismailis, numbering approximately 15 million worldwide, including 500,000 in Pakistan, along with significant populations in India, Afghanistan, and parts of Africa, hold a special reverence for their Imams, notably Imam Ismail, who passed away in 765 AD.

Prince Karim Aga Khan was a revered leader who took on the role of Imam at the young age of 20, following the death of his grandfather in 1957. His legacy continues to impact the global community as Prince Rahim steps into this important position, reflecting on his father's teachings and carrying forward the responsibilities inherent to the role. The Aga Khan Development Network, along with millions worldwide, mourns the loss while welcoming the new leader as he begins his journey in this spiritual leadership.
