Thailand officially recognizes same-sex unions, with a large mass wedding event marking this progressive change in law.
On a day of celebration and joy, couples from all walks of life gathered at Paragon Hall, located in the bustling Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok, to take part in a mass wedding ceremony, marking a significant milestone as Thailand became the third country in Asia to legally recognize same-sex marriages.
Among the couples was Rungtiwa Thangkanopast and Phanlavee Chongtangsattam, who recalled being turned away from a similar event twelve years ago because their love was deemed illegal. "We are thrilled that the love we have nurtured for two decades can finally be validated by society," expressed Phanlavee, encapsulating the emotions of many attending the ceremony.
Hosted by the rights group Naruemit Pride, the event took place on January 22, 2025, with colorful flower arrangements and dignitaries present to commemorate this historic day. As couples took turns walking down the aisle adorned with pink arches, they were officially married in accordance with the new law, with officials carefully registering their unions.
This landmark event shines a light on Thailand's shift towards acceptance, bringing hope to countless others who have had to conceal their love for too long. The newlyweds embraced a sense of pride as they celebrated not only their love but also the progress that society continues to make towards equality.
