The remains of Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria's former leader, who passed away at 82 in London, will be repatriated for a simple burial in Daura.

Muhammadu Buhari, the esteemed former president of Nigeria, passed away at the age of 82 in a London clinic on Sunday. His body is being returned home for burial in his hometown of Daura, located in Katsina state. Governor Dikko Radda, presently in London with Buhari's family, confirmed that the burial will take place later today. Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima is accompanying Buhari's remains back to Nigeria.

After his death, it was revealed that he had been battling health issues for several years. Despite his prominent status as a former president, Buhari will not receive a state funeral; instead, he will be buried in a simple ceremony, in accordance with Islamic customs. Islamic cleric Abdullahi Garangamawa stated that the burial would occur as quickly as possible, barring any delays in the arrival of the body due to nighttime prohibitions against burials in Islam.

Tributes have been streaming in for the late general, who notably served Nigeria in both military and civilian capacities. Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Buhari for his selfless dedication to the country. General Ibrahim Babangida, who was overthrown by Buhari in a 1985 coup, commended him for his moral guidance and modesty even after retirement.

Current President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to attend Buhari's funeral prayers in Daura and has declared a seven-day national mourning period. Tinubu expressed condolences and a commitment to honor Buhari’s legacy, starting with the lowering of national flags to half-mast to commemorate this somber occasion.
