The Panamanian-flagged tanker, Eventin, has lost power in the Baltic Sea, leading to German officials' accusations that it is part of Russia's shadow fleet used to bypass sanctions. The situation raises significant concerns over maritime security and the environmental impact, with the EU and US intensifying sanctions on the Russian oil industry.

Stuck in the Baltic: Russian 'Shadow' Ship Causes Security Concerns for Germany
Germany's maritime authorities engage in a rescue operation for an oil tanker linked to Russia's shadow fleet, raising alarms about European security.
Germany's maritime authorities have recently intervened to assist the Eventin, a tanker reportedly part of Russia's "shadow fleet," which is used to avoid international sanctions. This incident unfolded on Friday when the vessel, flagged in Panama, suffered a loss of power and steering capabilities while drifting in the Baltic Sea. In response, tugboats were employed to secure the vessel's safety and prevent environmental disaster.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed her apprehension regarding Moscow's tactics, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of circumventing sanctions through the deployment of dilapidated tankers. This incident comes amid ongoing sanctions from the US, UK, and EU targeting Russia's oil sector following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The oil tanker measures 274 meters in length and carries about 99,000 tonnes of oil. As of Saturday, authorities reported that there were no oil leaks from the vessel while a helicopter team was dispatched to establish towing connections, enabling three tugboats to take control of the compromised ship.
Maritime authorities monitored conditions closely, ensuring safety despite rough seas marked by 2.5-meter waves and strengthening winds. The towing operation is currently making its way to Sassnitz, a town on Rügen Island, with an expected arrival early on Sunday.
Despite the tanker flying the Panamanian flag, German officials maintain that Russia is responsible for the situation. Baerbock stated, "Russia is endangering our European security not only with its illegal war of aggression against Ukraine… but also with dilapidated oil tankers."
The issue of the shadow fleet has led to significant discussions within Europe. Last December, the EU outlined plans for additional sanctions aimed at this shadow fleet, viewed as a substantial threat. Russia has been implicated in a series of maritime disruptions, including damage to undersea cables, leading to a concerted response from Western nations.
With continued actions from the US and UK to impose further sanctions on Russia's energy companies like Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, the overall strategy appears aimed not only to economically weaken Russia but also to address potential threats to European maritime security. Gazprom Neft has publicly condemned these sanctions, arguing they are unfounded and unjustifiable.
This latest incident serves to highlight the complex interplay between maritime challenges and geopolitical tensions as nations continue to navigate the implications of Russia’s actions within global waters.
