Hamas Releases Video of 19-Year-Old Soldier Liri Albag Held Hostage
Recent footage raises concern over hostages as negotiations stall.
Hamas’s military faction has circulated a disturbing video featuring Liri Albag, a 19-year-old Israeli soldier who remains one of roughly 100 individuals still held captive in Gaza, nearly 15 months after the group’s initial attack on Israel. The video has emerged as discussions between Israeli and Hamas officials regarding a potential cease-fire continue in Qatar, albeit with limited success.
Albag was among the approximately 250 people captured during Hamas’s assault on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in a prolonged conflict. The last significant hostage release occurred during a temporary truce in November 2023, allowing 105 individuals to return home.
In the footage released on Saturday, Albag appears after being detained for what she claims has been over 450 days. She served in a lookout unit tasked with detecting threats near the Gaza border. During the horrific attack on her base, which led to more than 60 soldiers' deaths, she was kidnapped alongside six other female soldiers.
Her family shared their heartbreak over the video, expressing deep concerns regarding her evident psychological distress. “She is just dozens of kilometers away from us, yet for 456 days we have been unable to bring her home,” they lamented, imploring leaders to act with compassion as if their own children were entangled in such a tragedy.
As the season of negotiations stretches on, the clock continues to tick for the remaining hostages in Gaza.
